Ingredients to make Tomato Khajur Khatta/ Sweet tomato chutney with Dates

  • Tomatoes(medium Size)- 05-06 chopped
  • Grated Jaggery- 03-04 tbsp
  • Pancha phutana/ Panch phoran- 01 tsp
  • Grated Ginger- 01 tsp
  • Dry red chillies- 02
  • Roasted cumin and chilli powder- 01 tsp
  • Mustard oil- 01 tbsp
  • Salt to taste or 1/2 tsp
  • Dates de seeded- 05-06
  • Raisins- 7-8 optional
  • 1/2 cup water

How to make Tomato Khajur Khatta/ Sweet tomato chutney with Dates

  1. Heat the mustard oil to smoking point in a wok, lessen the heat.
  2. Add the panch phoran and the dry red chillies,when it splutters add the ginger and tomatoes ,cover and cook the tomatoes till slushy ,i.e for 5 mins on medium heat.Add the water if you like the chutney less thick.
  3. Add the grated jaggery, salt, dates and the raisins and cook till the jaggery melts and attains a nice red colour.Sugar can be added instead of jaggery.
  4. Lastly add the roasted cumin and chilli powder/ bhaja jeera Lanka powder, give one boil and switch off.
  5. Serve as an accompaniment with a rice meal or puris or parathas.

My Tip:

I always put jaggery and not sugar as the jaggery in the chutney gives a nice red colour to the dish .
