ABOUT Hyderabadi Chicken Tahari RECIPE

An authentic Hyderabadi one pot meal, perfect for those lazy winter night dinners. Hyderabadi chicken tahari is a rice delicacy cooked in onions, tomatoes, curd and chicken. This Chicken tahari is a traditional Hyderabadi recipe and an excellent meal to serve for the unexpected guests. Hyderabadi tahari is a mixed version of biryani recipe. It is developed by the Hindu bookkeepers of the Muslim Nawabs. Tahari is sold as street foods and you can also find it in the restaurants. It is very simple and easy to cook, ready in less time as compared to normal biryani. This tahari is mixed with chicken and cooked in some aromatic and flavorful spices. Hyderabadi tahari is not only a famous Hyderabadi rice recipe but also very popular in all over the worldwide. It is a delicious, aromatic rice recipe that can be made with less time and make with basmati rice or any other ordinary rice. Chicken tahari is normally served with curd, tomato chutney, onion raita and salad. It is a lip smacking dish which you can have in your lunch or dinner. To make Hyderabadi chicken tahari more decorative you can garnish it with fresh minced coriander leaves and almond flakes.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. ½ kg Chicken pieces
  2. 2 cups Rice washed and soaked for 15 minutes
  3. 1 Onion finely sliced
  4. 1 Tomato chopped
  5. 1 each -Cardamom Clove & Cinnamon stick
  6. ½ tsp Turmeric powder
  7.  tbsp Garam Masala
  8. Salt to taste
  9. 6 tbsp Oil
  10. To grind:
  11. 1 tbsp chopped Ginger
  12.  tbsp chopped Garlic
  13. 3 Green Chilies
  14. ĵ cup Coriander leaves
  15. 6 Mint leaves
  16. To garnish:
  17. 2 tbsp minced Coriander leaves

Instructions

  1. Make a fine paste of ingredients mentioned under ‘To Grind’.
  2. In a heavy bottom cooking vessel, add oil. Once the oil is hot, add cinnamon stick, clove and cardamom.
  3. When the spices start to release aroma, add sliced onions and fry till they turn translucent in colour. Now add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric and grinded paste.
  4. Cook till the tomatoes turn soft and oil starts to release from the masala. Now add the garam masala and chicken pieces. Saute till the chicken pieces get well coated with masala.
  5. Season with salt and add ½ cup of water. Cook till the chicken turns soft. Now add in the soaked rice and stir gently by adding 4 cups of water. Bring this to boil and add salt as per taste.
  6. Cook this dish covered on a low flame until the rice is perfectly cooked. Turn off the flame and leave it for 10-15 minutes before opening the lid to serve.
  7. Gently mix and garnish with fresh minced coriander leaves and almond flakes if using.
