A vibrant rasam for rice, which can be made in a jiffy.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. Toor dal - 1/4 cup, cooked and mashed
  2. Mint Leaves - A Handful
  3. Tamarind pulp - 1 tbsp
  4. Turmeric - 1/8 tsp
  5. Salt
  6. For masala powder:
  7. Coriander seeds - 1/4 tsp
  8. Cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp
  9. Fenugreek seeds - 1/8 tsp
  10. Pepper - 1/4 tsp
  11. For Tempering:
  12. Oil - 2 tsp
  13. Mustard seeds - 1/4 Tsp
  14. Asafoetida - pinch
  15. Curry Leaves - 1 sprig

Instructions

  1. Roast the spices given under 'masala' and grind to a fine powder when cool.
  2. Mix the tamarind pulp with the ground spices and add about 2 cups of water.
  3. Keep for boiling. Then add cooked dal, turmeric and salt. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Add chopped mint leaves and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Tempering:
  6. Heat oil, add the mustard seeds and asafoetida. When mustard splutters put in curry leaves.
  7. Take off heat and pour over the rasam. Serve hot with rice.
