ABOUT Meen Peera RECIPE

Meen peera is a traditional dish prepared using small fish like Anchovies (kozhuva), Netholi or Smelt. It goes well with rice as a side dish.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Fish(smelt) - 1/2 kg
  2. Grated Coconut - 1 cup
  3. Green chilli - 4
  4. ginger - 1
  5. garlic - 3
  6. Shallots - 6
  7. Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  8. curry leaves as required
  9. Gambogee (kudampuli) - 2 pieces
  10. Salt as per taste
  11. Coconut oil - 2 tbsp

Instructions

  1. Wash and clean the fish. Grind together grated coconut, shallots, ginger, garlic, green chilli, kudam puli, turmeric powder into a coarse paste. Heat 1/4 tsp coconut oil in a pan.
  2. Add the coconut mix, fish, salt and 1 tbsp water to it. Stir well. Cover and cook on medium flame for 5 minutes.
  3. Once fish is cooked well and the nice aroma of coconut comes, add the remaining coconut oil to it and mix well firmly. Take care not to break the fish pieces.
  4. Remove from Fire. Garnish with curry leaves. Serve with rice a s side dish.
