Prawns Masala

Ingredients to make Prawns Masala

  • 1 kg Prawns
  • 1 big Onion
  • 10 to 15 Shallots
  • 1 big Tomato
  • 5 cloves Garlic
  • 1 medium piece Ginger
  • 1 1/2 tsp Coriander powder
  • 1 tsp Chilly powder
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper powder
  • 1/2 tsp Fennel seeds powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp Garam masala powder
  • 1/2 tsp Tamarind pulp
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup Thick coconut milk
  • Salt as per taste
  • For Tempering:
  • Coconut oil - 1 tbsp
  • Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
  • Fenugreek Seeds - 1 tsp
  • Curry Leaves 4 - 5

How to make Prawns Masala

  1. Clean the prawns and keep aside. In a kadai pour 2 tbsp oil and splutter mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds. Add curry leaves. Add the sliced onions and shallots and saute till light brown.
  2. Add the finely chopped ginger and garlic. Saute well and add all the dry powders and salt. When the raw smell goes away add the sliced tomato. When the tomatoes are done, add the tamarind pulp and coconut milk.
  3. Let it boil for a minute. Add the cleaned prawns to the masala and mix well. Let the prawns get cooked in the masala. If there is more gravy put it on medium heat and let the masala become dry or semi dry (as per your wish).
  4. Add more curry leaves and if you need to make it more spicy sprinkle some more pepper powder. Serve hot with chapattis, kubus or rice.
