About Karyal Recipe

Spicy lentil pakoras in spiced lentil gravy.

Ingredients to make Karyal

  • Split black gram 2 cup
  • onion paste 1 tbsp
  • ginger garlic paste 1 tsp
  • turmeric 1/2 tsp
  • red chili 1 1/2 tsp
  • coriander powder 2 tsp
  • salt to taste
  • cumin 1 tsp
  • garam masala powder 1/2 tsp
  • coriander leaves for garnishing
  • chopped tomato 2
  • oil 4 tbsp

How to make Karyal

  1. Soak the lentil for 6 to 8 hours.
  2. Wash and remove the skin, make a smooth paste in a grinder.
  3. Whip well, add 1 tsp salt.
  4. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a wok, leave 1 tbsp paste and make small balls with the mixture, fry them golden.
  5. Add remaining oil, pop the cumin, saute ginger, garlic and onion paste.
  6. cook till onion becomes golden.
  7. Add dry spices stir for 2-3 minutes, then add tomatoes, cook the spices till oil separates.
  8. Make a batter with the remaining dal paste and 3 glass of water, mix along with masala, stir and mix well.
  9. After a boil turn the heat on medium, cook the gravy for 5 minutes.
  10. Now add the dal balls, cook it to 5 minutes more.
  11. Turn the heat, add garam masala, garnish with coriander.
  12. Serve hot with boiled rice.

My Tip:

karayal is a north indian dish, made from lentil.
