About Amritsari Sookhi Dal Recipe

Eaten as a side dish with chapatis, this version of the sookhi daal is simple and fuss-free

Amritsari Sookhi Dal

Ingredients to make Amritsari Sookhi Dal

  • Soaked Moong or Arhar dal 1 cup
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tbspn ghee
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 medium onion sliced
  • 1 inch piece ginger cut into two
  • 1 tomato chopped
  • a pinch of hing
  • 3 cups of water
  • coriander to garnish

How to make Amritsari Sookhi Dal

  1. Add dal, three cups of water, salt, turmeric powder and half the ginger in a pan.Bring it to boil on rapid heat, then simmer till just done.
  2. In another pan, prepare the tempering. Heat ghee and add asafoetida, cumin seeds, chopped onion and sauté till onion is brown. Add the remaining ginger, chopped tomatoes and sauté.
  3. Add chilli powder and sauté until the ghee starts leaving the pan. Strain the dal and add to the tempering. Stir fry and transfer into a serving dish
  4. Garnish with coriander and serve hot with chapati
