Tamata Chaaru

Ingredients to make Tamata Chaaru

  • 5 - 6 medium sized Desi tomatoes
  • water to dilute
  • 1 teaspoon each of mustard seeds and cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon of methi seeds
  • A pinch of turmeric powder
  • salt to taste
  • oil for tempering
  • A sprig of curry leaves
  • 3-4 green chillies
  • 1 teaspoon of grated jaggery
  • 2-3 whole dried red chillies

How to make Tamata Chaaru

  1. Wash the tomatoes. Cut them into quarters and boil them with just enough water. Let it cool and extract its juice.
  2. In a deep pan, add this diluted extract. Add 4-5 drops of oil, turmeric powder and let it come to a rolling boil. Let simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Heat oil in a tadka pan. Add mustard seeds, let it splutter. Add cumin seeds, methi seeds and fry for 5 seconds.
  4. Add green chillies, curry leaves, red chillies and fry for 10 seconds. Add tadka to the charu prepared.

My Tip:

Onions, garlic are optional ingredients. All these needs to be sauteed well before adding to the boiled charu.
