Masoor Dal

Ingredients to make Masoor Dal

  • 200 grams masoor dal
  • 1 small sized onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small sized tomato, finely chopped
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp ginger, finely grated
  • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • 2 tsp ghee
  • Salt to taste
  • Few coriander leaves, finely chopped to garnish

How to make Masoor Dal

  1. Wash the dal and cook it in a pressure cooker with turmeric powder and 2 cups of water. Cook this till 2 whistles blow.
  2. Once the pressure releases, mash this dal and add half cup of warm water and salt to taste. Keep this aside.
  3. Heat the ghee in pan, add the cumin seeds, asafoetida and grated ginger along with the red chilli powder, stir for a few seconds then add in the onion. Saute and cook for 3-4 minutes.
  4. Next add the tomatoes and cook for another 3-4 minutes. Add the dal to this mixture and stir well. Let this simmer and cook for 7-8 minutes on a low flame.
  5. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve it hot with rice.
