About Sorakaya Masala Recipe

My mother used to make this curry with puris for Sunday breakfast. In my suggestion, this bottle gourd curry goes well with puris.

Sorakaya Masala

Ingredients to make Sorakaya Masala

  • bottle gourd- 1 , cut into small cubes
  • onion- 1 big sized, finely chopped
  • green chillies- 3, slit in halves
  • oil- 1 tbsp
  • mustard seeds- 1/2 tsp
  • cumin seeds- 1/2 tsp
  • curry leaves- 1 sprig
  • turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
  • red chilli powder- 1/2 tsp
  • salt to taste
  • For the masala:
  • Grated fresh coconut- 1 tbsp
  • poppy seeds- 1 and 1/2 tsp
  • cashew nuts- 8
  • garlic cloves- 6
  • coriander powder- 1 tsp

How to make Sorakaya Masala

  1. Grind all the listed masala ingredients with a little water into a fine paste and set it aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, let them splutter, then add the cumin seeds and curry leaves. Next, add the onion and green chillies and fry till the onion turns pale.
  3. Now add the bottle gourd pieces, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, salt to taste and mix it well. Keep the flame low. Cover and cook it for a few seconds.
  4. Remove the lid and mix it, then add the ground masala and mix again. Cook this for a few seconds, then pour in 1 cup of water. Stir it well, cover and cook on a medium heat till the bottle gourd pieces turn soft and a semi-gravy is formed.
  5. Serve it hot with puris, rotis, or rice as desired.

My Tip:

Other then bottle gourd you can make this curry with boiled eggs, chow chow, drum sticks and brinjal as well.
