Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 200 gms Masoor dal
  2. 2 medium sized Tomatoes
  3. 1 medium sized Onion, finely chopped
  4. 4 Garlic pods, chopped finely
  5. 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  6. 1 tsp Red chilli powder
  7. 1/2 inch Ginger, finely chopped
  8. 1 Green Chilli, chopped
  9. 2 tbsp Ghee
  10. 500 ml Water
  11. Few coriander leaves, finely chopped
  12. Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash and rinse the dal thoroughly. You can also soak the dal for a while before cooking it.
  2. Take a pressure cooker, add the dal and pour in 500 ml of water with chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder and salt. Let this cook on a low flame for 15-20 minutes or till 3-4 whistles are blown.
  3. Once cooked, the dal should have a pulpy mixture and would require a little more water. However if the water consistency seems enough then do not add more water.
  4. To make the tadka, heat the ghee in a pan. Once it is hot, add the chopped onions and cook till they turn slightly brown.
  5. Next, add in the chopped garlic, ginger and chilli. Stir and cook till these ingredients slightly turn brown. Instantly pour this tadka on top of the dal.
  6. Simmer and cook the dal for a few minutes so that these flavours can infuse together. Garnish the chopped coriander on top.
  7. Serve with rice or roti as desired.
