Ingredients to make Yellow lentils salad

  • Moong dal / yellow lentils - 1/2 cup [ 1 cup size = 150 ml ]
  • Salt - as needed
  • Oil - 2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Chaat masala - 3/4 tsp
  • Onion - 1/2
  • Tomato - 1/2
  • Cucumber (chopped) - 3/4 cup
  • Mango (chopped) - 1/2 cup
  • Green chilli - 1
  • Coriander leaves - few
  • Mint leaves - few
  • Lemon juice - 1/2 tsp
  • Masala peanuts - 4 tsp
  • Sev ( om podi) or kara boondhi - 4 tsp
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 Tsp
  • Asafoetida - A Pinch
  • Sugar - 1/4 tsp

How to make Yellow lentils salad

  1. Soak the moong dal for an hour and cook it in a vessel with 1/2 cup of water. Make sure the dal is not cooked in mashed consistency, it has to be crunchy. Set it aside
  2. Heat a vessel with oil and add cumin seeds, asafoetida and turmeric powder. Once it splutters, add the cooked dal, salt, sugar and chaat masala
  3. Saute it for 1 - 2 minutes and then switch off the flame. Transfer this to a bowl.
  4. Chop onion, tomato, green chili, coriander leaves and mint leaves
  5. Before serving, mix (onion, tomato, green chili, coriander leaves, mint leaves, mango, cucumber, lemon juice, masala peanuts, om podi) everything together and add it to the dal mixture.
My Tip: Dal can be cooked and stored in the fridge on previous day itself. When you are ready to serve add the other ingredients. DO NOT add onion, om podi and peanuts until you're ready to eat. Instead of raw mango, any tart fruit like apple or pineapple can also be used.
