Masoor ki Dal or Red Lentils

Ingredients to make Masoor ki Dal or Red Lentils

  • 1 cup masoor daal soaked in water for half an hour
  • 1 clove garlic chopped
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
  • 1/2 tsp oil
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 cup water
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tblsp ghee or clarified butter
  • 3 cloves garlic sliced
  • Coriander leaves to garnish

How to make Masoor ki Dal or Red Lentils

  1. 1. In a pressure cooker, add oil and heat. Add cumin seeds to it and let it splutter.
  2. 2. Add bay leaf, onions, garlic and saute until the onions are softened. Add the turmeric powder, garam masala powder and salt to it.
  3. 3. Add all the soaked daal and top with water, stir and pressure cook for three whistles. If you do not have a pressure cooker, double the water and cook for 25 minutes on medium.
  4. 4. Meanwhile, heat ghee in a small pan, add all the chopped garlic to it and saute until brown.
  5. 5. Once the daal is cool enough to open, add the tempering of the garlic along with coriander leaves. Adjust for seasoning and water according to your preference.
  6. 6. Serve with rice or roti
My Tip: Squeeze a bit of lime to the daal just before serving
