ABOUT Misal Pav RECIPE

Misal Pav is a very popular dish from the Indian state of Maharashtra. Misal means curry and pav is bun. Both are served together and hence, known as "Misal Pav". It is generally sprouted moth beans cooked in a spicy gravy. They are served with a garnish of farsan / sev (savouries), chopped onion, tomatoes, coriander leaves and lemon wedges. This delicious and wholesome dish is actually had for breakfast, but they can be enjoyed any time of the day, either for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 2 cups sprouts
  2. 2 tbsp. oil
  3. 1 tsp. mustard seeds
  4. 1/2 tsp. cumin seeds
  5. 1/4 tsp. asafoetida
  6. 1 sprig curry leaves
  7. 2 onions, chopped
  8. 1 tbsp. ginger-garlic paste
  9. 2 tomatoes, puree
  10. 1 tomato, chopped
  11. salt to taste
  12. 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
  13. 2 tbsp. coriander leaves
  14. 1/2 cup farsan / sev
  15. 1-2 lemon wedges
  16. Dry roast & grind to a powder -
  17. 2 tbsp. fresh grated coconut
  18. 1 tbsp. coriander seeds
  19. 1 tsp. cumin seeds
  20. 6-7 dry red chilies
  21. 1" cinnamon stick
  22. 2 green cardamoms
  23. 4-5 cloves

Instructions

  1. The powder made out of the roasted ingredients.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and temper with the mustard seeds, cumin seeds and asafoetida.
  3. Add 1 chopped onion and curry leaves. Saute till light brown.
  4. Add the ginger-garlic paste and fry for a minute.
  5. Add the tomato puree & turmeric powder. Fry till the oil separates.
  6. Add the ground spice powder followed by the ....
  7. ......the sprouts and salt. Mix well.
  8. Add 2 1/2 cups water and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.
  9. Serve, garnished with farsan / sev, chopped onions, tomatoes, coriander leaves and lemon wedges.
