ABOUT Shenga Holige with Daal Payesam RECIPE

Shenga Holige/Peanut Poli is a traditional breakfast of Karnataka state.The other version being the plain Holige or Daal puran Poli. Substituting Daal with peanuts not only enhances the taste of the polis, but also makes it nutty and crunchy. Generally served with a dollop of ghee, here I have an accompaniment of daal Payesam to go along

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. Daal Payesam:
  2. 200 gm toor daal
  3. 150 gm jaggery
  4. 1 Tb cardamom powder
  5. Shenga Poli:
  6. 150 gm peanuts
  7. 250 gm all purpose flour
  8. warm and normal water as needed
  9. Salt to taste
  10. 1 Tb oil for kneading
  11. 1 ts ghee for cooking

Instructions

  1. Daal Payesam:
  2. Soak the Daal for 30 minutes and then presurre cook upto 2 whistles
  3. Let cool and then blend smooth with cardamom powder and jaggery
  4. Shenga Holige:
  5. Knead a soft dough by combining flour,water,oil and salt
  6. Rest covered for 30 minutes
  7. Dry roast peanuts for 5 minutes on medium heat
  8. let cool completely and then get grind with jaggery
  9. Place in a bowl and add warm warm and mix to combine
  10. Take a gold ball sized dough mix and roll into a small disc
  11. Place a peanut mix ball in center and seal the edges and start rolling flat using some flour dusting
  12. Heat a skillet and place the rolled Poli on it and let cook on medium heat for 2-3 minutes
  13. Add ghee around the polis and cook until both sides are done
  14. Serve hot with Daal Payesam
