ABOUT Sakkarai Pongal - Sweet Pongal RECIPE

Sakkarai Pongal or sweet rice pongal is traditionally made as an offering to sun god in tamilnadu for pongal or Makar Sankranti. Usually the pongal is cooked outside and shared with family and folks working in the farm as a thanksgiving meal. Traditionally the pongal is cooked in a vengala panai or brass pot.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 1 cup rice
  2. 1/4 cup moong dal
  3. 2 cups jaggery
  4. 4 cups milk
  5. Pinch of saffron
  6. 4 pinches powdered elaichi
  7. 1 pinch powdered ginger and nutmeg
  8. Half cup ghee
  9. 1/4 cup cashews and raisins

Instructions

  1. Take a pressure cooker and add a couple of spoons of ghee and slightly roast the moong dal
  2. Pressure moong dal with rice for 4 whistles
  3. In a pot add milk cooked rice and dal
  4. Add jaggery and cook for 20 minutes until all the milk is absorbed
  5. Add the elaichi, nutmeg and dried ginger
  6. Sauté few spoons of ghee with cashews and raisins
  7. Add to the pongal and yummy pongal is ready
