Fish Balchao

Ingredients to make Fish Balchao

  • A Kingfish or any other firm white-fleshed fish
  • 1 Onion
  • Oil for shallow frying
  • 20 dried Red chillies
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 tbsp Ginger garlic paste
  • 1/2 inch piece Turmeric (or 1/2 tsp grounded)
  • 3 Cloves
  • 1 inch piece of Cinnamon stick
  • 1 tsp Coriander seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 2 Tomatoes finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup Coconut milk
  • 1 tbsp Vinegar
  • 1/4 cup Coriander leaves chopped
  • Salt to taste

How to make Fish Balchao

  1. Marinate the fish with salt, 1/2 tsp pepper and ginger garlic paste for 15-20 mins
  2. Grind red chillies, pepper,turmeric, cloves,coriander seeds and vinegar together.
  3. Heat oil in the pan and saute onions till brown.
  4. Add tomatoes and cook till the oil separates.
  5. Add the prepared paste in the pan and cook for 5 mins.
  6. Then add fish and coconut oil. Cook it for 7-10 mins on low flame.
  7. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve it with rice or malabar parantha.
