ABOUT Basale Pundi with Onion Gravy RECIPE

As know steamed recipes are always very healthy.This is a Manglore style traditional breakfast recipe.Basale Pundi is prepared using rice, coconut,onion and spices.Basalae Pundi is time consuming,once it prepared eat it with chutney or any side dishes.The steamed rice dumpling taste great,when soaked in onion gravy and serve it with ghee or coconut oil.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. For Pundi, 250 grm Dosa rice
  2. 2 cup water
  3. 1/4 cup grated coconut
  4. salt as per taste
  5. For Gravy,2 onion big size chopped
  6. 1/2 cup grated Coconut
  7. 1 tsp urad dal
  8. 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  9. 3 Red Chilli
  10. 2 tsp corriender seeds
  11. 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  12. 1/4 tsp termeric powder
  13. 1 tsp oil
  14. Small marble size tamarind
  15. Crystal salt as per taste
  16. For Tempering, 5 to 7 curry leaves
  17. Pinch of assefotida
  18. 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  19. 2 tsp oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. Take rice in a bowl wash it and soaked it in water for atleast 7 to 8 hours
  2. Once rice nicely soaked,drain water from it and spread the rice on plate or in cloth till and keep aside till dry
  3. When rice completely dry, transfer in mixer jar coarsaly grind it consistency should be between rava and fine powder,now add grated coconut and just pulse for 1 or 2 times
  4. Now take water in pan add salt and boil,when start boiling add rice rava gradually, continue stiring to avoid lumps
  5. Continue stiring when it start to become thick but soft, it's done now switch off gas and wait till it become slightly cool
  6. Now wet palm with water and start to become round size balls of it. Other side prepare a steamer,when make all balls place in steamer for steamed cook it for 12 to 15 minutes on low to medium flame
  7. For the Gravy,take urad dal,red chilli,cumin, fenugreek, corriender seeds and 1 tsp oil and roast all in low to medium flame till pleasant smell and urad dal become brown
  8. Other side soaked the tamarind to get tamarind extract
  9. Take roasted masala and grated coconut in mixer jar and grind it with using some water and make smooth paste of it
  10. For tempering,heat oil in pan add mustard seeds and curry leaves when pops add assefotida,add chopped onion when it's colour change and become soft add termeric powder and water and cook it
  11. When it completely cook add grind masala,termeric extract,salt and water mix add some water and close lid to cook and boil and make fine gravy
  12. Now add chopped coriander and switch off gas
  13. Now add steamed rice dumpling and rest for minutes
  14. Now Basale Pundi with Onion Gravy is ready to serve,Garnish with fresh coriander leaves,serve hot with ghee or coconut oil for more taste
