ABOUT Godhuma Rava Payasam RECIPE

Godhuma Rava Payasam (Dalia/Broken Wheat Kheer) is a Tamilian speciality prepared during festivals and celebrations. This payasam uses Broken Wheat and Instead of sugar, it also uses jaggery which is pumped with iron.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 1/2 cup Broken wheat rava (dalia)
  2. 1 cup Jaggery , powdered
  3. 1 tablespoon split Yellow Moong Dal
  4. 1 cup Milk at room temperature
  5. 1/4 teaspoon Cardamom Powder
  6. 1 + 1/2 cup Water
  7. 2 teaspoon Fresh coconut , grated (optional)
  8. For garnishing :
  9. 1 tablespoon sliced almonds
  10. Raisins 6
  11. 5-6 walnuts
  12. Cherry 5

Instructions

  1. Keep a heavy bottom pan on the heat. Dry roast the dalia until it is golden. Do not over roast. Keep aside.
  2. In the same pan, dry roast the moong dal till fragrant.
  3. Mix the dalia and dal together, add it to a pressure cooker. Top it up with one cup of water and pressure cook it on a low to medium heat for up to 4 whistles.
  4. When the 4 whistles are done, turn the cooker off and allow the cooker to release all its pressure naturally.
  5. Add half cup of water to the powdered jaggery, in a mixing bowl. Dissolve it completely, then sieve the mixture to remove impurities.
  6. Place a wide pan on the heat and add the jaggery water to it. Allow it to boil on a low heat for about 5 minutes.
  7. Add the cardamom powder and the cooked dalia and dal mixture, and pour it into the jaggery mix.
  8. Mix well to combine and allow them simmer for 3-4 minutes.
  9. Add the grated coconut at this stage, mix well and switch off.
  10. Then add milk and stir to mix.
  11. Now garnish it with sliced almonds , walnuts and with cherry.
  12. Serve the Godhuma Rava Payasam hot or chilled on any festive occasion.
