ABOUT Karnataka Rice Appam RECIPE

This is a comfort snack famous in karnataka and it gives instant energy as it has jaggery rich in iron..These sweet appams are prepared during karthikai festival(festival of lamps). It is also a healthy snack to be given to children .

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. Raw rice -1 cup
  2. Poha/ flattened rice - 1/4 cup
  3. Grated coconut- 3/4 cup
  4. Jaggery - 1 cup
  5. Cardomom powder- 1/2 teaspoon
  6. ghee - 1 teaspoon
  7. oil to fry

Instructions

  1. Wash and soak raw rice in water for 3 hours .
  2. Wash and soak poha separately for 30 minutes
  3. After 3 hours Drain the water from rice (keep it aside ) and add it to mixie . Add poha , coconut,jaggery and cardamom powder and grind it into smooth paste .No need to add water while grinding as jaggery itself will help to loosen the batter
  4. Add ghee to the batter .And mix well. The batter should be of idly batter consistency,(that is little thick.)
  5. Now in appam kadai add oil and once heated pour the batter to each pit and turn upside down when golden brown . Fry both the sides.
  6. Serve hot.
