BEERAKAI PACHCHADI - ridge gourd chutney

Ingredients to make BEERAKAI PACHCHADI - ridge gourd chutney

  • Ridge gourd - 1
  • coriander (dhania) seeds - 1 tsp
  • jeera - 1tsp
  • Udat dal (minapa pappu) - 1 tsp
  • Moong dal (pessara pappu) - 4 tsp
  • curry leaves - 4 springs
  • green chilly - 1
  • tamarind - 1 inch
  • jaggery - 1 tsp
  • sesame seeds (nuvvulu) - 3 tsp or as needed
  • oil for sauting
  • salt

How to make BEERAKAI PACHCHADI - ridge gourd chutney

  1. In a nonstick pan or cooking pot, add 4 tsp of oil.
  2. Make a seasoning of jeera, udat dal, moong dal, dhania seeds, curry leaves, green chilly. Add sesame seeds towards end.
  3. Add finely cut ridge gourd pieces and salt. Allow it to cook for a while till the ridge gourd is cooked. Keep tossing in between.
  4. After cooling, add the jaggery and tamarind. Blend it in a mixer.

My Tip:

Unlike other spicy chutneys, this is quite healthy and my kids love it with rice due to the mild sweetness. Moong dal and Sesame seeds give thickness and consistency. Quantity for Jaggery, Moong Dal and Sesame Seeds can be varied depending on individual taste.
