Pongal/pullagamu

Ingredients to make Pongal/pullagamu

  • rice - 2 cups
  • moong dal - 1/4 cup
  • green chillies - 2
  • Red chillies - 4
  • mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • cumin seeds-1 tsp
  • ginger - 1 inch crushed
  • Asfotedia - 1/2 tsp
  • curry leaves - a fistfull
  • salt to taste
  • water - 5 cups

How to make Pongal/pullagamu

  1. Dry roast the moong dal. Measure the rice. Add the roasted moong dal to the rice. Wash both together. Keep aside.
  2. Take a deep sauce pan. Add oil for tempering. Add mustard, cumin. Add the red chillies then the green chillies. Add asfotedia. Stir. Add the crushed ginger and fry.
  3. Now add water and salt. Cover and let it come to a rolling boil.
  4. Open lid and reduce flame. Add the washed rice and dal. Cover and again wait for a rolling boil turning the flame to high.
  5. Once boiling, lower the flame and let it cook for 20 minutes covered.
  6. Open after 20 minutes and mix well
  7. Serve hot.
