Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Idly batter - 2 cups
  2. Toor dal - 1 cup
  3. Shallot onions - 10
  4. Tomato - 1
  5. Salt - as required
  6. Mustard - 1/2 tsp
  7. Dried red chilli - 2
  8. Curry leaves - few
  9. Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  10. Sambar powder - 2 tbsp
  11. Asafoetida - 1/2 tsp
  12. Ghee- 3 tbsp
  13. Tamarind pulp - 1 tbsp
  14. Onion - 1
  15. Oil - 1 tbsp

Instructions

  1. For mini idly: Coat a mini idly plate with ghee and pour the batter in spoons to get perfect shape into the mould plate and steam in idly pot till it's cooked. Remove the idlys with a wet spoon and keep aside in a casserole.
  2. For sambar : In a pressure cooker add soaked and washed toor dal, a pinch of salt , turmeric powder,one tomato with 2 cups water and keep for 4 whistles. Let it settle down.
  3. In a pan add oil when hot add mustard seeds let it splutter. Add curry leaves , asafoetida,dried red chilli.
  4. Finely chop shallot onions and add to it and sauté well till it turns light brown. Add salt to cook onions faster.
  5. Add sambar powder to it and sauté well
  6. Now mash the cooked toor dal and tomato and add it to the pan.
  7. Give a stir and add tamarind pulp
  8. Check for seasoning and cover n cook for 5 mins
  9. For Mini idly sambar: Pour the cooked sambar in a bowl , add the cooked mini idlys. Pour ghee generously and add chopped onions on top. Serve hot
