About Chinese Chai Kueh(Steamed Vegetable Dumplings) Recipe

Chai Kueh or Chai Kuih is a typical Chinese snack. It is very popular in Malaysia and Singapore too. Stir fried Jicama(Yam Beans) is wrapped in a crystal like outer covering usually made with wheat flour/all purpose flour,/tapioca flour, which is then folded in banana leaves, and then steamed. The Jicama(Yam beans) is usually not available in India. So, in this recipe, I have replaced it with Sweet Potato, and the taste was too good.

Ingredients to make Chinese Chai Kueh(Steamed Vegetable Dumplings)

  • For outer covering: maida 1 cup
  • Hot water 3/4 cup approx.
  • salt as req.
  • oil as req.
  • banana leaf 1 cut into 6 pieces
  • For Stuffing: Grated Sweet potato 1 cup
  • Grated carrot 1/2 cup
  • shallots 5 sliced
  • garlic 5 fine chopped
  • sugar 1/4 tsp
  • salt as req.
  • oil 1 tbsp or as req.

How to make Chinese Chai Kueh(Steamed Vegetable Dumplings)

  1. In a pan, pour oil, add garlic, shallots, sweet potato, carrot, sugar, salt everything one by one, and keep on sauteing without sticking until the veggies are well cooked. Stuffing is ready.
  2. In a bowl, add the maida, salt, 1 tsp oil. Add hot water little by little, and knead well to get a loose dough. Outer covering is ready.
  3. Now, apply oil in banana leaf, take lemon sized dough and spread it well to get thinner edges and thicker center. Apply stuffing inside and close the leaf and seal well. Repeat this until all the stuffing and outer covering dough are finished.
  4. Keep the banana leaves in idli pot and steam for 10-12 mins in medium flame. That's it. Serve with your favourite sauce or as it is.

My Tip:

You can also use wheat flour instead of maida.
