ABOUT Amranthus/Chawli/Thotakura Chutney RECIPE

Chawli chutney/thotakura chutney is simple south Indian style chutney which goes well with rice, idly, dosa and even parathas.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 1 big bunch of thotakura/chawli/amranthus leaves (wash, clean and chop)
  2. Lemon sized tamarind
  3. 4 green chillies
  4. 4 cloves of garlic (optional)
  5. 1 tsp urad dal
  6. 1 tsp chana dal
  7. ½ tsp coriander seeds
  8. ½ tsp Cumin Seeds
  9. 1 tsp oil
  10. 1/4th tsp asafoetida
  11. Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan, add coriander seeds and cumin seeds; fry for a minute.
  2. Add urad dal and chana dal; fry till dals are golden brown.
  3. Add green chillis and garlic; sauté for a few seconds.
  4. Add the thotakura/amranthus leaves and sauté till the leaves soften. It will take approximately 4 to 5 minutes.
  5. Add tamarind and fry for 2 to 3 minutes till the raw smell is gone.
  6. Take the pan off the heat and let it cool completely.
  7. Grind all the ingredients along with pinch of asafoetida and salt until smooth.
  8. Enjoy this thotakura chutney / pachadi with steamed rice, idli, dosa or upma..
