Ingredients to make Oats Vegetable Upma / Oats Upma

  • Oats - 1 cup
  • Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
  • Onion- 1 (finely chopped)
  • Green Chillies- 3 (slitted)
  • Ginger- 1 inch piece (grated)
  • Carrots- 1 medium sized (finely chopped)
  • Green peas - 1/4 cup
  • Coriander Leaves- for garnishing
  • Salt to taste
  • Water - 1 and 1/4 cups
  • For Seasoning:
  • Mustard Seeds- 3/4 tsp
  • Urad dhal- 1 tsp
  • Channa dhal- 1 tsp
  • Oil- 1 to 2 tbsp

How to make Oats Vegetable Upma / Oats Upma

  1. Heat a pan, add the oats and dry roast till it turns slightly brown in colour. Keep aside.
  2. Heat oil in the same kadai and add all the ingredients under 'For seasoning' one by one. After it crackles, add the chopped onion, ginger and green chilli. Fry till the onion becomes translucent.
  3. Now add the finely chopped carrots, thawed green peas and salt. Mix it well.
  4. Add 1 and 1/4 cup of water and turmeric powder. Stir well. Close the pan with the lid and allow it to cook. Once the carrot and green peas are cooked, add the roasted oats. Mix it well with the remaining water.
  5. If you feel the water is less, just sprinkle some water and allow it to cook. Cover the pan and cook the oats in a medium flame till the water is absorbed.
  6. Once the oats become soft and fluffy, turn off the gas. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve it hot with Coconut Chutney.
My Tip: You can also add lemon juice to give a mild and tangy taste. If doing so, keep it to the end.
