Hot Cross Buns

Ingredients to make Hot Cross Buns

  • 3 cups all purpose flour(maida)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbsp Skim Milk powder
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp Active dry yeast
  • 50 gms butter, softened
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4- 1 cup water
  • For the cross on top- 1/2 cup Icing sugar
  • 2 tbsp Milk
  • a few drops of Vanilla extract

How to make Hot Cross Buns

  1. Heat the water till lukewarm, add the 2 tbsp Sugar and yeast to it.Leave for 15 minutes till it becomes frothy, then proceed.
  2. Take flour in a large bowl, add 1 egg(reserve the other one for brushing on top), skim milk powder, salt, raisins, cinnamon, butter and vanilla extract. Combine lightly with a fork.
  3. Knead into a smooth dough, with the addition of the yeast water. Lightly oil a bowl and place ball of dough in it. Cover with cling film and let rise till double in bulk.
  4. Punch down dough and knead again till soft and smooth. Divide into 12 balls and place on a greased baking tray.
  5. Let rise for 30-40 minutes, in the meanwhile preheat oven at 200 deg C.
  6. After they have doubled, beat the reserved egg in a small bowl and brush the tops of the buns carefully with it. Bake the buns till golden on top, remove and let cool completely.
  7. For the cross on top- Take a bowl and combine icing sugar, milk and vanilla extract. With a fine brush mark an "X" on top of the buns, like shown in the picture. The buns are ready to be served.
  8. I brushed mine with some extra melted butter for softness.

My Tip:

Add some lemon/orange zest if you like!
