Ingredients to make Amaranth leaves dal

  • 1 cup amaranth leaves, washed and cut finely
  • 1/4 cup toovar dal
  • 1/4 cup masoor dal
  • 2 green chillies
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 onion cut
  • 1 tomato, finely chopped
  • 1/2 inch ginger, shredded
  • 1/2 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp dhania powder
  • A little asfoetida
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp oil
  • Mustard seeds, urad dal ,1 red chilli for Seasoning
  • Few curry leaves and coriander leaves

How to make Amaranth leaves dal

  1. Soak the dals for 20 mins and cook it in a pressure cooker with turmeric till its soft. Then keep aside.
  2. Once again, take the cooker, add oil and the seasoning ingredients, mustard seeds, udad dal, red chilli, green chilli, asafoetida, curry leaves, onion, ginger, garlic and fry it.
  3. Then add the turmeric powder, along with the tomatoes. Finally add the amaranth leaves along with salt. Let it cook till one whistle blows.
  4. Now remove the lid, add the dals and check the salt. Let it simmer for 3 mins.
  5. Serve it warm.

My Tip:

If you want, you can avoid the onion and garlic also. This is optional. You can also substitute it with amaranth with palak.
