ABOUT Fish Cooked in Tomato Gravy RECIPE

I am personally very fond of fish. This post is for all the fish lovers out there. Rohu/Rohi fish is very popular in Odisha, this being a fresh water fish tastes really good. Today I am gonna share a very simple and quick recipe of rohu fish in tomato gravy. It does not consume much time and goes very well with hot steamed rice.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. Rohu Fish - 2 large pieces or 4 medium pieces
  2. Tomato - 1 medium sized, chopped
  3. Green chillies - 2 sliced
  4. Garlic - 2-3 shallots
  5. Cumin seeds - 1 tbsp
  6. Coriander/Cilantro fresh - chooped (for garnishing)
  7. Turmeric - 1/2 tbsp
  8. Oil - 2 tbsp (for frying) and 2 tbsp (for curry)
  9. Salt - to taste
  10. Sugar (Optional) - 1/2 tsp
  11. Water - 1 cup

Instructions

  1. Rub 1/2 tbsp turmeric and 1/2 tbsp salt to the fish evenly. Set it aside for 10 minutes.
  2. In a non-stick pan, pour the oil and shallow fry the fish pieces until they are medium brown in color on both sides.
  3. Soak the cumin seeds for 10 minutes and then blend it together with garlic until its smooth.
  4. Pour oil into the pan, once it becomes warm enough, add the chopped tomatoes and keep stirring at regular intervals for about 5 minutes.
  5. Add the garlic and cumin paste to the tomatoes, allow it to cook until you see that the oil has separated from the paste.
  6. Then add turmeric, salt, sugar (Sugar is usually added if people don't prefer the curry to be too tangy, however this depends completely on an individual's taste). Stir it well and add water, then cover the pan.
  7. When the gravy stars to boil, add the fried fish pieces and green chillies. Cover it and let it boil for 3 - 4 minutes.
  8. Remove the curry from the heat and garnish it with fresh coriander/cilantro leaves.
  9. Fish in tomato gravy is now ready to be served with warm white or brown rice.
