About Moonga gatti Recipe

Moonga gatti is a vegetarian dish prepared in Goan saraswat households during festivals and other vegetarian days .It is free from onion and garlic unlike the other gravy based sprouted dishes prepared in Goa.

Moonga gatti

Ingredients to make Moonga gatti

  • Sprouted Moong 2 cups
  • water 2 cups
  • Grated coconut fresh or dry 1 cup
  • cloves 2
  • Black pepper 4
  • cinnamon 1 inch piece
  • tamarind marble ball size
  • Grated jaggery 2 tbsp
  • cumin seeds 1/2 tsp
  • coriander 1 tsp
  • turmeric 1/4 tsp
  • Dry red chillies 2
  • Pink salt

How to make Moonga gatti

  1. Boil Moong with 1 cup water
  2. Dry roast all the masala
  3. Roast the coconut till brown
  4. Grind the coconut, masala and tamarind without adding water so that all the masala is ground into powder
  5. Add remaining water and grind into coarse paste
  6. Add the mixture to the Moong and let it boil
  7. Add jaggery and salt
  8. Optionally you can add a tempering of mustard seeds, asafoetida and curry leaves

My Tip:

Adjust the red chillies according to taste
