About Japanese Steamed Cake Recipe

Soft, moist, fluffy and melt- in -the- mouth, Japanese sweet buns or steamed cakes are fun to make and so addictive, that you will be drooling after a bite!

Japanese Steamed Cake

Ingredients to make Japanese Steamed Cake

  • 250 gm self raising flour(superfine baking flour)
  • 3 tablespoon sweetened condensed milk
  • 3 tablespoon castor sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoon cold milk
  • 2 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 2 glasses of water

How to make Japanese Steamed Cake

  1. Pour the water in a steamer, cover and bring it to boil
  2. Meanwhile put all the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix well
  3. Add oil, milk, vanilla and condensed milk one after the other and fold in well
  4. Add the eggs next and whisk hard/well until the sugar is well dissolved in the batter
  5. Finally sieve in the flour bit by bit to create a gooey cake mixture
  6. The mixture should be like a normal cake mix(not very runny, but not too thick either)
  7. Pour in the batter upto half the capacity of your mould
  8. place the cake moulds in the steamer and steam cook for 10-12 minutes on Low heat
  9. check by inserting a knife or toothpick, to see if the steamed cakes are ready
  10. Take off the steamer once done and let cool and then unmould
  11. Enjoy warm if you like freshly steamed cakes or refrigerate them to have them chilled. Enjoy!

My Tip:

If using plain all purpose flour, add a teaspoon of baking powder to the batter. Do not over steam, orelse the cakes would harden from within, instead of being fluffy. You can steam using both, silicon moulds or paper cups
