About Poondu Kuzhambu/ Garlic curry Recipe

This traditional garlic curry is a very common dish at my place . A saviour curry which keeps cold and flu at bay . Garlic is known for its medicinal benefits but only few know garlic cures cold and respiratory issues. This curry is one perfect dish for winters.

Poondu Kuzhambu/ Garlic curry

Ingredients to make Poondu Kuzhambu/ Garlic curry

  • garlic cloves 30
  • shallots 5
  • onions medium sized roughly chopped 2
  • tomatoes medium sized ripe finely chopped 3
  • mustard seeds 1 teaspoon
  • fenugreek seeds 1/2 teaspoon
  • cumin seeds 1/2 teaspoon
  • salt
  • turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon
  • red chilli powder 1 teaspoon
  • Sambar powder 1/4 teaspoon
  • curry leaves 10
  • Sesame oil 3 -4 tablespoons
  • tamarind gooseberry size used to extract 1/2 cup tamarind juice

How to make Poondu Kuzhambu/ Garlic curry

  1. Grind 30 garlic cloves, 5 shallots and 2 medium onions chopped , little water to a smooth paste.
  2. Heat 3 tablespoons sesame oil in a deep wok. Add fenugreek seeds .
  3. Crackle 1 teaspoon mustard seeds and 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds.
  4. Add 10 curry leaves .
  5. Pour the ground garlic onion paste to the wok . Sauté and cook for 2 minutes till raw smell leaves
  6. Add 3 finely chopped ripe tomatoes . Sauté and cook till tomatoes turn mushy .
  7. Add salt . 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder . 1 teaspoon red chilli powder .1/4 teaspoon sambar powder.
  8. Let the masala cook for 2 minutes . Then add tamarind extract 1/2 cup.
  9. Let the curry cook .Adjust the consistency .Thick curry tastes yummy . Let the curry boil for 3mins
  10. Garlic curry with tangy , spicy flavours is ready to serve . Serve hot with hot rice .
