sarshe ilish is a signature Bengali dish. ilish eka hilsa fish cooked in musturd oil, musturd sauce and green chillies

Ingredients to make sarshe ilish( hilsa in musturd sauce)

  • hilsa fish- 4 ring pieces
  • 5-6 tbsp yellow musturd
  • 1-2 tbsp black musturd
  • 2-3 tbsp grated coconut
  • 1/4 cup curd
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 4-5 green chillies slitted
  • 1 tsp onion seed
  • musturd oil
  • salt to taste
  • some chopped coriander leaves for garnishing

How to make sarshe ilish( hilsa in musturd sauce)

  1. wash the fish pieces and dry with a kitchen towel. rub salt and turmeric on both side of the fish pieces and keep aside.
  2. make a smooth paste of two types of musturd, grated coconut with 1-2 green chillies, a pinch of salt and a pinch of turmeric.
  3. put some water and keep the musturd sauce aside to settle.
  4. heat the Kadhai. put 4-5 tbsp musturd oil. when the oil is hot enough put marinated fish pieces one by one and fry lightly on both side. keep them aside.
  5. add some onion seed in the same oil. when aromatic flavour of fried seeds come add the musturd sauce through a shieve.
  6. beat the curd with little water and put it when the musturd sauce starts boiling. add 3-4 slitted green chillies and some more water.
  7. once the gravy starts boiling carefully put the fish pieces one by one . cover and cook on low flame for 4-5 minutes.
  8. garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
