Traditional Goan sweet dish made from rice, coconut and Goan coconut jaggery.

Ingredients to make Godshe

  • 125 gms broken rice
  • 2 cups grated fresh coconut
  • 125 gms coconut jaggery
  • 1 tbsp ghee

How to make Godshe

  1. Grind coconut with a 1/2 cup water. Squeeze out the thick juice and keep aside. Repeat the process two more times.
  2. Add 1 cup water to the left over coconut after squeezing the thick juice and grind again. Squeeze out the juice again. This will be thin. Repeat again and keep aside.
  3. In a pressure cooker, heat ghee and roast the broken rice for a few minutes.
  4. Add the thin coconut juice and pressure cook for 2 whistles. When cool, transfer to a deep pan.
  5. Add the jaggery and the thick coconut juice and cook on slow flame till the jaggery melts.
  6. Can be served hot or chilled.

My Tip:

The traditional way of cooking is simmering over the stove top, stirring continuously. Pressure cooking saves time and fuel.
