Ingredients to make Moong Dal Halwa

  • moong dal - 1/2 cup
  • Ghee - 1/2 cup
  • Sugar - 1/2 cup
  • Milk - 1 cup
  • Water - 1/2 cup
  • Cardamom powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • saffron - few strands
  • almonds - 6 - 7
  • pistachios - 6 - 7

How to make Moong Dal Halwa

  1. Wash and soak moong dal in enough water for 4-5 hours. After 4-5 hours, drain the excess water and keep it aside.
  2. Add the drained moong dal to a mixer jar and grind it to a smooth paste without adding water.
  3. Soak few strands of saffron in 2 tablespoon of warm milk and keep it aside.
  4. Add ghee in a pan or kadai. Add ground moong dal mixture to it. Turn on the flame and saute it in medium flame till the dal gets roasted well and starts releasing a nice aroma. This will take around 10-12 minutes.
  5. Reduce the flame to low, add milk, sugar and water. Let it boil. Then reduce the flame, cover and cook on low flame till the entire moisture gets absorbed.
  6. Open the lid, add saffron milk, cardamom powder and chopped nuts. Moong dal halwa is ready to serve.

My Tip:

It is very important to saute moong dal in low flame until it gets roasted well. Otherwise, the halwa will have a raw smell.
