ABOUT Coconut stuffed fried moong puli RECIPE

Coconut stuffed fried moong puli is one of the most famous, delicious and traditional pitha of Bengal. The stuffing is generally made of coconut and date palm jaggery and the shell is made of all purpose flour or rice flour.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. For pulis :
  2. Moong dal 1/2 cup
  3. All purpose flour or rice flour 1/2 cup
  4. Half of a coconut grated
  5. Sugar 50 gms or as per taste
  6. Jaggery 50 gms or as per taste
  7. Baking soda 1/4 tsp
  8. Salt a pinch
  9. Oil or ghee 2 tbsp for dough
  10. Oil for frying
  11. For Sugar Syrup :
  12. Sugar 250 gms or 1 cup
  13. Water 1 cup
  14. 2 Green Cardamoms

Instructions

  1. Dry roast the moong dal till lightly browned.
  2. Add 1,1/2 cups of water to the roasted dal and cook till done.
  3. Now transfer the boiled dal into a bowl and set aside to cool.
  4. Mix the grated coconut, jaggery and sugar in a kadai and cook stirring continuously till the jaggery and sugar melts completely. Continue to cook till dry.
  5. Now transfer the stuffing into a bowl and keep aside.
  6. Make a smooth paste of the boiled dal by using grinder. Don't use any kind of water to it.
  7. Now take dal paste, salt, ghee or oil and baking soda together and knead well for about 3-4 mins.
  8. Divide the dough into equal portions and make balls from it.
  9. Now take a dough ball on palm, press it gently, it will shape like a circular disc. Press it with fingers to make it thin. Place one oval shaped stuffing in the middle of the disc.
  10. Fold it so that the two edges come together, close the edges by pinching with fingers. The sealing should be tight otherwise while frying, the filling might come out.
  11. Make all the pulis.
  12. Now take sugar, cardamoms and water in a pan, mix them together till the sugar dissolve. Let it boil over a high flame for 2-3 mins. Turn off the heat.
  13. Heat sufficient oil in a kadai and deep fry the pulis till golden brown.
  14. Now add the deep fried pulis into the warm sugar syrup, wait for 3-4 mins then remove.
  15. Serve hot.
