ABOUT Bajra and Rice Khichdi RECIPE

Bajra and rice khichdi is a favourite dish during winter. It's very popular in North specially Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 1 cup rice
  2. 1/2 cup bajra
  3. 1/2 cup moong or chana dal
  4. 1 medium sized onion, diced
  5. 2-3 green chillies, chopped finely
  6. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  7. 1/2 tsp of small spoon asafoetida (hing)
  8. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  9. 1 tsp fennel powder
  10. Salt to taste
  11. Desi ghee for cooking
  12. Fresh coriander leaves
  13. Roasted sesame seeds to garnish

Instructions

  1. Clean the bajra and soak it for atleast 6 hours. Moong or Chana dal and rice is also soaked for 30 mins. After a whole preparation, take a cooker and add all the three things.
  2. Mix it in the cooker, add the required water and salt in it and cook it on a medium flame. Once 4-5 whistles blow, turn off the stove.
  3. Now heat a non-stick pan, pour in the ghee and add the cumin seeds and onion. When it turns translucent in colour add the green chilli, hing, turmeric and fennel powder. Simmer it for a minute, now add the already prepared bajra and rice mixture and mix it well.
  4. Now cook it for 4-5 mins in a low flame. Now the bajra and rice khichdi is ready to be served.
  5. Serve it hot with some pickle, desi ghee and sprinkle some roasted sesame seeds and fresh coriander leaves over it.
