About Bhapa Chingri Recipe

Bhapa which means steaming in Bengali & Chingri means prawn. If you look at history, steaming is one of the oldest method of cooking that dates back to centuries in ancient China. In the Ayurvedic way of cooking, this method is considered as the best resulting in a more nutritious food than boiling. You can use other fish like Bhetki (Barramundi), Ilish in place of shrimp and make this dish.

Bhapa Chingri

Ingredients to make Bhapa Chingri

  • Shrimp 400 gm
  • turmeric powder - 1 tsp
  • poppy seeds - 1 tbsp
  • mustard seeds 3 tbsp
  • White mustard seed or melon seed - 1 tbsp
  • Fresh coconut - 3 tbsp
  • green chillies - 5 (more if you want)
  • Black pepper 2 tsp
  • mustard oil - 3 tbsp
  • salt as per taste
  • water

How to make Bhapa Chingri

  1. Peel and devein the shrimps. Marinate it with salt and turmeric powder for 15 mins. Soak the poppy seed, mustard seed, melon seeds with 5 tbsp water for 30 minutes.
  2. Make a fine paste of it by adding coconut, green chillies, black pepper. Now mix this paste with prawns. Add oil to it and mix well.
  3. You can use a steamer to cook this or you can use pressure-cooker. If you are using pressure cooker then use a steel box that fits inside the pressure-cooker. Heat a cup or little more water in the cooker so that only the base of the box up to one inch is submerged.
  4. Put the prawn mixture inside the steel box and close it's lid. When the water in the pressure-cooker starts boiling, drop the box inside the cooker and close the lid. Cook at a medium flame till one whistle blows and it's done.
  5. Serve it hot with steamed rice.

My Tip:

This dish goes best with steamed rice.
