Ingredients to make Tuvar Dal (Maharashtrian Varan)

  • 1/2 cup tuvar dal
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 tomatoes chopped
  • A pinch of asafoetida (heeng)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 2 green chillies chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon garlic grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • salt acc to taste

How to make Tuvar Dal (Maharashtrian Varan)

  1. Pick and wash the dal well under running water.
  2. Pressure cook the dal with water, salt and turmeric powder, about 3-4 whistles on medium heat. Once pressure releases, open the lid.
  3. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds,asafoetida and chopped onions.Saute until golden brown.
  4. Now add chopped tomatoes,grated garlic,red chilly powder and green chillies.Stir for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add the tuvar dal and let simmer covered for 5 mins.Garnish with some curry leaves and serve.
