Maach Posto-Fish in Poppy Seeds Paste

Ingredients to make Maach Posto-Fish in Poppy Seeds Paste

  • Rohu Fish (Rui)- 4 pieces
  • Onion-1/2 cup, finely sliced
  • Green chillies- 2
  • Poppy Seeds (made into a paste)- 3 tbsp
  • Tomato- 1/4 cup, chopped
  • Onion Seeds-1 tsp
  • Red chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
  • Mustard oil - 4 tbsp
  • Sugar- A pinch + 1 tsp
  • Salt - as per taste

How to make Maach Posto-Fish in Poppy Seeds Paste

  1. Clean the fish and marinate it in salt and turmeric for 20 mins.
  2. Heat oil and fry the fish till it turns golden on each side and keep it aside.Temper the same oil with onion seeds and slit green chillies.
  3. Now add the onions and a pinch of sugar which will help to caramelise the onions. Fry for 5 to 6 mins till it turns golden brown. Meanwhile make a paste of the poppy seed paste with a tbsp of water. Now add the tomato and saute.
  4. Once the tomato is soft and cooked, add the poppy seed paste and stir continuously otherwise it may stick to the bottom. After the paste turns light golden in colour, add the fish pieces along with 1/4 cup of water,1 tsp sugar and salt.
  5. Cover and cook for 5 mins or till the water reduces. Now add 1 tbsp of the mustard oil and cover the pan for 3-4 mins.
  6. Once the gravy is reduced to the desired consistency take it off the heat and serve with hot rice.

My Tip:

Adding a little sugar brings a depth of flavour to the gravy. This dish along with hot rice is a marriage made in heaven.
