ABOUT Kali Dal&Missi Roti RECIPE

Kali dal -today i am going to share with you all traditional himachali kali dal recipe.This dal is must in menu at my Mom's place during festive season.Specially on Diwali and karvachauth.Usually the dal is served with plain rice.My my family loves to have this delicious dal with missi roti most of the time.Currently i am living in Vietnam-Hanoi.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. INGREDIENTS FOR KALI DAL
  2. Whole black lentils. 1 cup
  3. Finely chopped onion. 2 Big
  4. Thinly sliced onion. 1 Big
  5. Ginger sliced 1 Inch
  6. Tomato pureed 4 Big
  7. Garlic cloves 5-6 no
  8. Water As required to cook dal.
  9. Turmeric powder/Haldi 1Tsp
  10. Red chili powder 1Tsp
  11. Cumun seeds/jeera 1Tsp
  12. Hing /Asofetida A pinch
  13. Coriander powder/Dhania powder 2Tsp
  14. Dry Mango powder/Amchur. 1Tsp
  15. Salt to taste
  16. Oil 5 Tbsp
  17. Tej patta 2No.
  18. Cloves /Laung. 3-4 No
  19. Black cardmom /Badi Elaichi. 2No
  20. INGREDIENTS FOR MISSI ROTI:-
  21. Whole wheat flour/Atta 1Cup
  22. Chickpea flour/Besan 1Cup
  23. Green chilies chopped. 2Tbsp
  24. Roasted coriander seeds/Sabut dhaniya 1Tbsp crushed
  25. Carom seeds/Ajwain 1Tsp
  26. Red chili powder 1Tsp
  27. Turmeric powder/Haldi 1/2 Tsp
  28. Thick yogurt/curd 2Tbsp
  29. Oil 2Tsp
  30. Salt to taste
  31. Ghee 4-5Tbsp

Instructions

  1. STEPS FOR PREPARING KALI DAL:-
  2. Wash the dal under running water.
  3. Place washed dal in a pressure cooker.
  4. Add tumeric powder,sliced onions,salt ,2 Tbsp of oil and enough water(6-7 cups )to the dal.
  5. Cook in pressure cooker for 20-25 minutes from first whistle.
  6. Make sure you put enough water in a dal,else dal can burn in the pressure cooker.
  7. When cooked set aside ,and let the cooker pressure release naturally.
  8. Puree the tomatoes along with garlic cloves and set aside for later use.
  9. Heat oil in a pan
  10. Add tej patta,black cardamom,laung to hot oil and saute for a minute.
  11. Add jeera and hing saute until jeera turns brown.
  12. Add sliced ginger and cook for a minute.
  13. Add chopped onions and cook until onions turns translucent in color.
  14. Add coriander powder, turmeric powder,red chili powder and amchur powder to cooked onions.
  15. Stir for a minute make sure do not burn the spices.
  16. Add tomato puree ,salt and mix well.
  17. Cook covered for 10-15 minutes .Stir in between.
  18. Put the cooked dal cooker on low -medium heat uncovered.
  19. Add tomato onion mixture to black dal and mix well.
  20. Let the dal cook uncovered on low flame for about 30 minutes.
  21. Stir in between .
  22. Adjust the dal consistency according to your need.
  23. While dal simmer on low flame let's prepare Missi Roti.
  24. STEPS FOR PREPARING MISSI ROTI:-
  25. In a big bowl add whole wheat flour,chickpea flour,chopped green chilies,carom seeds, crushed coriander seeds,thick curd,turmeric powder,red chili powder,oil and slat.
  26. Mix all ingredients with your hands.
  27. Add water little by little to make a soft and smooth dough.
  28. Cover it with kitchen towel and keep said for 15 minutes.
  29. Grease your hand with little oil and divide dough into equal parts and shape into round balls.
  30. Heat a tava on medium heat.
  31. Take one ball at a time and roll into roti.
  32. Place the rolled roti on hot tava .
  33. Apply little ghee on both the sides and cook till both sides are fully done.
  34. Apply ghee on cooked missi roti.
  35. Serve kali dal and missi roti hot.
