Thanks to social media, we are aware of what’s going on around us! Recently, a video went viral on different social media platforms where we can see how a woman named Anita Chaudhary was denied entry into a restaurant on the basis of her apparel. Anita Chaudhary shared a short video where it is evident that the staff members of a restaurant in New Delhi refused to grant an entry to her as she was wearing a saree.
This incident took place at the Aquila restaurant in New Delhi on September 19, 2021. The 16-second long clip shows how the staff member of Aquila restaurant said: “Ma’am, we allow only smart casual and saree is not counted as smart casual.” In the video, we can see how the woman expressed her resentment towards it and said: “Show me that saree is not allowed.” She also wrote: “We argued over saree, and a lot of excuses were made, but I was not allowed to enter the restaurant, because the Indian attire – saree is not a smart outfit. I have never been insulted like this. I also feel hurt”.
After this video went viral, many people expressed their anger towards the restaurant and some called it an attack on Indian culture. On the other hand, the restaurant officials released a statement and said how the woman misinterpreted their point and said they have always welcomed guests irrespective of their attire. They said that the woman was misbehaving with their staff members and in order to tackle the situation, the staff member was forced to comment on her outfit. The Aquila team however apologized for commenting on the woman’s outfit in their official statement.
