According to legends, Princess Veeravati visited her parent’s house to celebrate her first Karwa Chauth. But, she fainted on account of fasting for the whole day. It is said that her dear brothers could not see their sister in pain and tricked her to break the Karwa Chauth fast. Just when she broke her fast, she got to know that her husband was dead. She thus decided to save her husband and prayed to Lord Shiva to make her husband alive. The princess thus observed the Karwa Chauth fast and brought her husband alive. Thus, Karwa Chauth is celebrated every year to celebrate the bond of love and pray for the health and long lives of their spouses.

1. One is supposed to not eat anything or even drink water after performing Sargi. You can break your fast only after the moon rises.

  • Baya: Baya is what mother-in-law gifts to her daughter-in-law. Baya consists of a sari and all the make-up items including jewellery that a suhagaan or married woman needs.
  • Henna: Mehndi or henna is auspicious for all married women. So, make sure that you apply henna on your hands for Karwa Chauth celebrations.
  • Sweets: After breaking the fast, it is sweets that are eaten first. So, do not forget to keep sweets in your Karwa Chauth thali.
