These healthy and nutritious shami kababs are perfect for any parties as starters or during Iftaar.These are also known as kala chana kababs.Protein rich snack for kids too.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Black chick peas/kala chana(dry) 1 cup
  2. Boiled potatoes 4 medium
  3. onion 1 medium
  4. Green chilli 1
  5. ginger 1 inch
  6. coriander leaves 2 tbsp
  7. mint leaves 2 tbsp
  8. Fennel seeds 1 tbsp
  9. cumin seeds 1 tsp
  10. turmeric 1/2 tsp
  11. coriander powder 1 tsp
  12. Red chilli powder 1 tsp
  13. Chaat masala 1 tsp
  14. Garam masala 1/2 tsp
  15. Dry mango powder 1 tsp
  16. gram flour 2 tbsp
  17. salt to taste
  18. oil for shallow frying


  1. Wash and soak the chickpeas for 8 hours.
  2. Drain the water and add 2 cups fresh water and little salt in a pressure cooker.
  3. Take 3 to 4 whistles.When pressure releases check the chana.It should be properly boiled.
  4. Put the boiled chana in sieve so that all water is seperated.
  5. Take this chana in food processor and add ginger,coriander,mint leaves and a tbsp of fennel seeds.
  6. Pulse and make a coarse mixture.
  7. Now take this in a big bowl and add boiled and mashed potatoes.Add finely chopped onions also
  8. Add all the spices,salt in this mixture.
  9. Mix well and add gram flour.
  10. Mix to form a dough like mixture.Shape round disc like kababs.
  11. Take a pan and add 1 tbsp of oil.Spread all over and place 5 to 6 kababs in a pre heated pan.
  12. Shallow fry till golden from both sides.Add some more oil around the kababs to make them crisp.Keep the flame low.
  13. Serve shami kababs with some onion slices,lemon wedges and coriander mint chutney.
