A yummy comfort dish, this kootu, rasam and chutney is prepared using basic things.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Yellow moong dhal 1/2 cup
  2. Padwal 1 medium size cut in medium pieces
  3. tomato 1
  4. Fresh grated coconut 4tsp
  5. Urad dhal 1tsp
  6. cumin seeds 1 tsp
  7. Black pepercorns 4-5
  8. Dry red chilly 5-6
  9. Asafoetida/hing 1/2tsp
  10. Curry leaf few
  11. mustard 1/2 tsp
  12. Fenugreek seeds 1/4 tsp
  13. oil 1 tsp
  14. water as required
  15. salt as per taste


  1. Wash and pressure cook moong dhal, add turmeric and enough water for 4 whistles
  2. Heat a pan and dry roast urad dhal, fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds, black peppercorns and dry chilly for 3-4 mins or until aromatic.
  3. Make sure the spices are not burnt.
  4. Cool the roasted items and grind it to a fine paste adding fresh coconut and little water.
  5. In a wide pan add the pressure cooked moong dhal, ground paste, medium sized tomato pieces, padwal pieces, salt and water to adjust the required consistency.
  6. Close and cook for5-6mins or until starts to boil.
  7. For seasoning, heat oil splutter mustard seeds, curry leaf and asafoetida, pour this over the prepared kootu
