A typical mangalorean konkani style curry flavoured with onion and ginger

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. 5 crabs, washed and cleaned
  2. Salt to taste
  3. 2 Onion - chopped
  4. 1 inch ginger - chopped
  5. 3 Green chillies - chopped
  6. 3 cups freshly grated coconut
  7. 5 - 6 whole dry red chilly, roasted in little oil
  8. 1 marble sized tamarind ball
  9. 1tbsp coconut oil

Instructions

  1. Marinate the crab with chopped onion, ginger, green chillies and salt. Let it stand for 20-30 minutes.
  2. Meantime grind masala paste by grinding coconut, red chillies and tamarind to smooth paste with 2-3 cups of water.
  3. Take a wide clay pot or sauce pan, add ground masala paste and bring it to a boil. Add the marinated crabs, check the consistency of the gravy and add water accordingly.
  4. At this point check for seasoning. You can add a little salt if needed. The gravy should be neither too thick nor too watery. Boil for 4-5 minutes and take it out of the fire.
  5. Serve hot with simple plain hot boiled rice.
