ABOUT Kumbakonam Kadappa (Side dish for Idli & dosa) RECIPE

kadappa is a type of stew made with moong dal & potatoes. Its served with Idli dosa & puri also.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 1/2 cup Moong dal
  2. 2 Potatoes
  3. 2 Onions sliced
  4. 3 cloves garlic crushed
  5. Salt to taste
  6. Water as needed
  7. 1 tomato chopped ( optional )
  8. For Grinding
  9. grated coconut 4 tbsp
  10. Small piece of ginger
  11. small piece of cinnamon
  12. 2 cloves
  13. 1 tsp khus khus
  14. 4_6 green chilies
  15. 1 tsp Fennel seeds
  16. For tempering
  17. 1_2 tbsp oil
  18. 1 tsp mustard
  19. 1 bay leaf
  20. 1 sprig curry leaves
  21. coriander chopped for garnishing

Instructions

  1. Pressure cook Moong dal and potato.
  2. Mash one potato dal, cut the other potato into cubes .
  3. Grind the ingredients given under grinding into smooth paste. Heat a kadai with oil and temper the given items given under to temper
  4. Add onions, crushed garlic and saute till onions turns transparent ( if you want to add tomato add n saute till it turns mushy).
  5. Now add a cup of water n salt n let it roll boil. Now add the dal n potatoes n grounded masala n simmer for 5_6 minutes ( till the raw smell of masala goes ) stir in between other wise it will get burnt at bottom.
  6. Check the consistency and add water if needed
  7. Garnish with chopped coriander n serve hot with soft soft Idli or crispy dosas.
