Mutton cooked in Red Sorrel leaves, Its an authentic Andhra non vegetarian meal.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Mutton -1/2 kg
  2. Red Sorrel Leaves - 1 cup (Freshly picked and washed )
  3. onion - 1 large (Finely chopped)
  4. Slit green chillies -4
  5. Red chilli powder - 1 tbsp
  6. turmeric Powder -1/2 tsp
  7. salt to taste
  8. ginger Garlic paste - 2 tsp
  9. coriander powder -1 tsp
  10. Grated coconut - 2 tbsp
  11. Poppy seeds - 1/2 tsp
  12. coriander leaves - 2 tbsp (finely chopped)
  13. To Temper
  14. cloves -3
  15. cardamom -2
  16. cinnamon - 1/2" Stick
  17. cumin seeds -1/2 tsp
  18. Dry red chillies - 2
  19. oil - 2 Tbsp + 2 tsp


  1. Clean and wash the mutton. Pressure cook with turmeric powder and 1 cup water upto 3 whistles. In a pan add the 2 tsp oil saute the red sorrel leaves. Cook it until the leaves are wilted. Once cooled grind it to a coarse paste.
  2. Also grind the coconut and poppy seeds to a fine paste by adding little water,keep it aside.
  3. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan add the temper ingredients given under& "To Temper". Add the Ginger garlic paste, saute it the raw smell goes away, then add chopped onion and slit green chillies, saute until the onion turn translucent .
  4. Add the Red chilli powder and coriander powder. Again saute it till the raw smell goes away. Add Salt and the cooked mutton along with stock. Bring to boil until the water evaporates. Add coconut paste. Saute it for 5 mins.
  5. Finally add the coarsely ground red sorrel leaves,mix it well.Stir continuously for 5 Minutes. Add the chopped coriander leaves, turn off the flame.
