ABOUT Medu Vada / Garelu RECIPE

Traditional South Indian healthy breakfast dish . Urad dal supplies enormous stamina to the pelvic bones and that is why elders serve these Vadas / Garelus for girls very often . Urad dal Garelu is one superfood for girls who attained puberty recently , carrying moms and feeding mothers . Moreover, Medu Vadas / Garelus are offered as neivediyam / Prasadam to God for every occasion / Pooja in South Indian homes .

Ingredients Serving: 10

  1. White urad dal 1 cup equals 250 ml
  2. Oil for Deep frying
  3. Black whole pepper 1.5 tablespoons
  4. onion small 1 finely chopped
  5. Ginger chopped 3/4 teaspoon
  6. Green chillies 2 finely chopped
  7. Salt 1.5 teaspoon or more as preferred
  8. Curry leaves finely chopped fistful

Instructions

  1. Wash , rinse 1 cup( 250ml) white urad dal thrice till clean . Soak dal overnight in extra water .
  2. Grind the soaked , drained chilled dal to a smooth thick paste by adding cold water .
  3. Cold urad dal gives fluffy soft , crunchy Vadas .
  4. Add 1 small finely chopped onion, 1.5 tablespoons whole black pepper,chopped green chillies 2,ginger
  5. chopped 3/4 tsps, chopped curry leaves ,salt to the urad paste . Mix .Cover, rest for 5 minutes .
  6. Heat oil for deep frying.Wet your palms,fingers.Pat medium sized vada within palms.Make a centre Dad
  7. hole on the Vada . Drop the Vada in super hot oil .Reduce flame for even cooking . Fry until f
  8. golden . Repeat steps to fry Vadas using remaining batter . Fluffy crunchy Garelu/ Medu Vadas are
  9. ready. Serve hot with sambar and chutney .
