ABOUT Sweet And Tangy Manhi RECIPE

I discovered the authentic mouth-watering dishes from the north-western areas of Himachal Pradesh ( Bilaspur, Una, Hamirpur, Kangra and Chamba districts) during my visit to the ancestral village of my in-laws. Mahni is a delightful semi liquid dish made from raw or half-ripe green mangoes and is usually eaten with plain boiled rice.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Raw or half-ripe mangoes – 2 large
  2. Onion – One large
  3. Roasted Cumin seed Powder – 1 Teaspoon
  4. White Sugar or Powdered Jaggery (Shakkar)– If required (depends on how sweet or sour you like the dish)
  5. Red chili Powder – 1/2 Teaspoon
  6. Fresh Crushed Mint Leaves – 3-4
  7. Salt – to taste
  8. Cold water - 2 cups

Instructions

  1. Wash and boil the raw mangoes (you can steam them too).
  2. When done, let them cool, then peel the skin to free pulp in a bowl. Remove the seed.
  3. Mash the pulp with a potato masher to make it smooth.
  4. Finely chop the onions and wash the fresh mint leaves and crush them a little.
  5. Add cold water to the pulp, stirring it gently till it makes a nice semi liquid preparation.
  6. Add the chopped onions, crushed mint and spices.
  7. Add sugar or jaggery powder if the preparation is too sour. Make it as sweet or sour as you like. I prefer it a little sour.
  8. Garnish with mint leaves and serve cold with hot rice or roti.
